Summer heat and drought breaks all records

 This summer was the driest in 100 years and the second hottest since Luxembourg's current borders were established 180 years ago, the government said on Friday.

The average temperature in June, July and August was 19.3 degrees Celsius, the second highest since records began in 2003, according to AgriMeteo, the Meteorological Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the agency, August was the hottest month in the last 184 years.

According to AgriMeteo, this summer had the most days with temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius. Since March, heatwaves and a lack of rainfall (about 67 mm less than usual) have contributed to the drought, authorities said. It was the driest summer since 1921, forecasters said. The data comes from a network of 36 automated weather stations in all regions of Luxembourg.

Vineyards in Luxembourg's Moselle Valley have been affected by heat and drought and risk damaging the vines themselves, said Ern Schumacher, president of the region's Association of Private Winegrowers. The vines need up to 70 liters of rainfall a month, but that hasn't happened, Schumacher said in July.

If human-induced climate change makes summers hotter and drier, Luxembourg vineyards could be forced to grow grapes used for red wine rather than white wine, which has lost its reputation in the Moselle region, says the Institute of Science and Technology from Luxembourg.
